While Alcoholics Anonymous has undoubtedly been of great help to many individuals who have problems with alcohol, it is not a “cure all”, and certainly not the only method for dealing with problem drinking. Co-Written by Dr. Ellis, this book helps the reader identify how alcohol (or other drugs) may be having a negative life impact, and then guides the reader step by step on how to use the principles of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) to stop problem drinking. First, personalized goals are established, and then irrational beliefs about alcohol that are preventing these goals are challenged. From here, the reader is instructed how to change self-defeating beliefs (by actively disputing their validity) into a belief system that is more realistic and more in-line with the readers life goals. While there is no substitute for psychotherapy, this self-help book can help someone with problem drinking find their own road to recovery, and in the process learn to have a more rational and enjoyable life.
