Theory & Practice of RET

by Albert Ellis Ph.D.

An excellent way to learn about the theory and practice of RET straight from its founder, this CD contains a lecture by Dr. Ellis in 1962 which articulately outlines the essentials of RET, while teaching therapists how to apply it in practice. Dr. Ellis describes how he developed his theory of RET after his own lack of success in using Freudian psychoanalysis. With the help of stoic philosophy, he explains how he created RET and then explains the fundamental basis of RET theory. Recognizing that the normal human disposition involves self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, Dr. Ellis argues that this can be overcome by hard work in disputing irrational beliefs which are at the core of human disturbance. Without going deep into a patients’ past, Dr. Ellis explains how he instills quick and lasting change in his clients by way of the active-directive RET approach. He provides examples of how sessions are conducted while highlighting specific cognitive, emotive, and behavioral techniques common to the practice of RET. A useful RET tutorial for both public and professionals.
