“How to Achieve a Healthy vs. Addictive Relationship” explains the difference between enjoying love and relationships compared to the extreme need and drive to have a relationship. Dr. Exner asks listeners to examine their own relationships for jealousy and self-sacrificing behaviors and to identify desperation demands (“I must be loved and they must love me.”). Healthy love and the truths of love are described in detail (i.e., remaining an individual, trust, communication, still being able to put yourself first) compared to cinematic versions of love (i.e., pain, passion, always putting your love first, acting in self-demeaning ways). Listeners also learn how to identify what truly matters in a loving relationship. Techniques to defeat and challenge desperate behaviors are addressed.
